Reimagining Libraries for the Modern World

When you think of a library, what comes to mind? Libraries often serve as a support hub for local communities, yet they’re becoming scarcer every year. Children and young people are losing free access to books and computers, which is starting to limit how they learn and study. Even something as simple as using a printer suddenly becomes an inconvenience. Since 2010, it’s estimated that over 800 public libraries have closed.

Tackling the problem

It’s not just a case of opening more libraries; the existing ones need reimagining to become places of inspiration that will attract people to use them. Many of the remaining libraries are outdated, uncomfortable, and drab, often creating a stagnant environment rather than an inspiring one. Across the industry, companies are rethinking how libraries are designed, renovating and refurbishing spaces to make them more welcoming and inspiring to use.

Products that help inspire

At JDD, we are proud to have been chosen to supply furniture for multiple projects, helping to create inviting, modern spaces that are both stylish and functional. Everyone needs a space to work or study, whether that’s on their own or as part of a group. Generic open-plan areas don’t always cater for this, so our Bea, Bob and Penelope meeting pods help create secluded spaces that allow users to work on their own or together. Libraries such as Hackney, Tamworth and Wombourne are embracing this modern approach.

Even with the most modern interiors, a simple, quiet corner with comfortable seating is essential. Visitors and staff alike benefit from an area where they can relax and be present. Our Douglas chair, for example, is a fresh take on the traditional wingback chair, creating a more comfortable, welcoming place to sit, as seen in Darlington Library.

Making productive spaces

The most important part of any renovation is ensuring all the space is used productively, giving visitors a space they can actually use and spend time in. Banquette seating creates a casual seating area that’s both inviting and functional. Our Terry curved banquette seating was used to build a full 360° curved seat at Chorlton Library, while our Connie and Fearne planters created a series of booths at Hackney Library.

Today, we know that a person's environment plays a huge role in their concentration and mood, with a greater focus on wellbeing and mental health helping reshape spaces all over the world. It’s no longer just about how a space looks; it’s about how it helps people use it.
