How Nita is changing the furniture industry – jddfurniture

At JDD Furniture, we constantly push the boundaries of innovation. We proudly unveil our latest step towards a more sustainable future: NITA, an innovative Sustainable Seating Pod. Designed with people and the planet in mind, this forward-thinking seating solution merges environmental responsibility with a sleek, contemporary design.

Design and Innovation

Nita was conceived and prototyped entirely in-house. Using a parametric model, we explored forms digitally. VR and AR enabled us to visualise forms at a 1:1 scale, significantly reducing the need for wasteful physical prototypes, making the project sustainable from the start. Finally, full-scale wooden mock-ups ensured real-world functionality, merging digital precision with artisanal expertise.

The seat inside Nita was designed to follow the curve of the steel frame and sit seamlessly within it. This meant that every step of the process, from imagination to installation, had to be exact, precise, and accurate.

Innovation extended beyond form-making into materials. In collaboration with Camira, JDD utilised advanced knitting techniques to achieve Nita's distinctive surface. This partnership redefined what fabric could do, delivering both depth and tactility while seamlessly blending traditional craft with modern technology. Nita is both sustainable and beautiful.

Even the structural details demonstrate innovation. Standard market fixings fell short of the vision, so JDD engineered bespoke components to integrate the halo light effortlessly. These unique fixings not only ensured stability but also enhanced the clean, sculptural quality of the design.

Taking inspiration from nature, the Nita shell has nods to leaf and petal formation. While many companies use advanced knit technology solely for seating upholstery, JDD looked outside the box, celebrating the manufacturing technique to create something truly beautiful. The varying gradient within the knit's woven pattern carries a visual function and an aesthetic signature, adding privacy in a way that's only possible with this manufacturing technique.

Nita is at the forefront of employee and employer wellness and wellbeing. Its function is to offer a calming, private and quiet solo space perfect for taking calls, focused work, or simply a break from the open workplace. Unlike typical office furniture, Nita is a wellness-forward, tech-enabled solution tailored for today's hybrid workspace.

Turning the tide: Giving ocean plastic a new purpose

seaqual initiative

At the heart of the Sustainable Seating Pod lies a commitment to circularity. The pod features upholstery crafted from SEAQUAL® YARN, a pioneering material made from marine plastic waste.

Through the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE, ocean plastics—including PET bottles, fishing nets, and other debris—are collected by a global network of fishermen, NGOs, and local communities from oceans, beaches, rivers, and estuaries. Collected waste goes through a sorting, cleaning, and processing cycle to become upcycled marine plastic, which transforms into SEAQUAL® YARN—a high-quality, sustainable polyester yarn.

The result: a durable, beautiful textile that both looks good and does good. This process actively reduces the environmental burden of plastic waste while supporting local economies and raising awareness of marine pollution.

By choosing SEAQUAL® YARN, JDD Furniture strengthens its contribution to preserving aquatic ecosystems and combating ocean plastic.

Precision meets sustainability: The power of Camira Knit

camira knit machine

In collaboration with Camira, a leader in textile innovation, we leverage the advanced capabilities of Camira Knit technology to upholster the pod with minimal waste and maximum precision.

Camira Knit is a cutting-edge digital knitting process that creates textile components directly from yarn—without cutting or sewing. This 3D knitting technology enables seamless upholstery solutions shaped to fit, reducing offcuts and eliminating excess components. The result is not just efficient but elegant, offering a clean, modern aesthetic and exceptional comfort.

Using computer-controlled machinery, the Camira Knit process ensures pinpoint accuracy, supports lean manufacturing, and minimizes waste at every stage - perfectly aligning with JDD’s mission to design high-performance, eco-conscious workspaces.

A deeper commitment to sustainability

Environmental sustainability drives the pod's material innovation. Collected waste goes through a sorting, cleaning, and processing cycle to become upcycled marine plastic, which transforms into SEAQUAL® YARN—a high-quality, sustainable polyester yarn. The result: a durable, beautiful textile that not only looks good but also does good. This process actively reduces the environmental burden of plastic waste while preserving aquatic ecosystems. Nita's frame is also made from 100% recyclable steel tubing, coated in non-toxic powder paint, which further ensures its longevity and circularity.

Economic sustainability is reflected in the way the pod supports responsible manufacturing and resilient industries. The SEAQUAL INITIATIVE strengthens local economies by creating new value streams from marine waste, while Camira Knit technology enhances production efficiency. Using computer-controlled 3D knitting machinery, the process delivers seamless upholstery with minimal waste, reducing offcuts and excess components. This lean, future-ready approach lowers costs, supports regional supply chains, and promotes long-term resource efficiency.

Social sustainability is interwoven throughout the pod's story. By collaborating with NGOs, communities, and fishermen to recover ocean plastics, the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE generates social value, providing livelihoods, bolstering coastal economies, and increasing awareness of marine pollution worldwide. Within the workplace, the pod itself promotes wellbeing, offering employees a comfortable, restorative environment that encourages focus, privacy, and inclusivity. Nita is designed not just as a product, but as a space that supports people, fostering healthier, more mindful work cultures while contributing to stronger communities beyond the office.

With its recycled materials, advanced fabrication methods, and timeless design, this pod encapsulates our drive to design responsibly for tomorrow’s world. By uniting form, function, and environmental stewardship, JDD continuously redefines the standards for sustainable furniture.
