How are we hitting our sustainability goals? – jddfurniture

Given the current climate, companies worldwide are looking for ways to cut costs and become more environmentally friendly. Whether this is to help the planet or cut energy costs, it's obvious now more than ever that we must embrace new ways of working.

Here at JDD Furniture, we are unwavering in our commitment to sustainability. We invest significant time, money, and effort into reducing our carbon footprint across the entire business. By prioritising sustainable practices and reducing carbon emissions, we contribute positively to the environment and set a solid foundation for our future, reaping various long-term benefits.

How are we lowering our carbon footprint?

There are endless ways that a business can reduce its carbon footprint. We are constantly investigating and investing in more ways, but currently, below is a list of activities we have worked on along with our sustainability advisor - Sadie Millermaggs:

water based spray adhesive

Water-based adhesives: All our glues and adhesives are water-based, which is not an industry standard but something we chose.

Ultra-low VOC plywood: E1-rated WISA Spruce Plywood that contains no harmful chemicals or preservatives.

20% recycled glass: All the glass used in our products, is made from at least 20% recycled glass.

logistics

25-mile radius: We source as many materials as possible from within a 25-mile radius of our HQ, helping to reduce carbon emissions directly related to logistics.

Timber recycling: We prevent reusable timber from going to landfills by recycling it in one of two ways: Grade A is chipped and shredded to be reused in agriculture, and Grade B is incinerated for energy.

cnc nesting

Material nesting: To ensure as little waste material as possible, we use the latest nesting software on our CNC machines (wood and fabric) to fit as many usable pieces onto each sheet of raw material as possible.

solar panels

Solar panels: Utilising the roof space of our HQ, we installed solar panels and have so far planted the equivalent of a seven-acre forest by reducing our dependency on the grid.

fabric donation

Excess fabric and textiles: Finding new life for offcut materials in smaller projects or through responsible local partnerships helps minimise waste going to landfills. We also donate leftover rolls of material to local schools, colleges, and businesses.

Foam: We collect all our foam offcuts and waste and reform them into reconstituted foam, which is then used in our sofa ranges.

FISP: We are proud members of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme, which means we promise to monitor and actively reduce our carbon footprint throughout our operations.

FSC®: We are a certified FSC company, which means we only source timber from FSC-certified distributors. This protects precious ecosystems and biodiversity and ensures that the local workers are protected and given suitable working and living conditions.

Our Responsibility

We have a responsibility to our community and environment. As a manufacturer, we also need to be gentle with the environment. That means we never waste raw materials and always reduce, reuse, and recycle!

With the increasing awareness of environmental issues, many consumers prefer to support eco-conscious companies. By promoting our sustainable practices, we are attracting and retaining environmentally aware customers and paving the way for a potential increase in sales and brand loyalty. Such practices can also help attract and retain employees who value corporate environmental responsibility, ensuring a bright future for our company.

These measures are just the tip of the iceberg for what we have planned for JDD Furniture and our future. Follow us on social media to come on the journey with us!
